As a Jerez Law personal injury attorney, some cases stay with me long after they’re resolved, not because of the settlement amount, but because of what it took to fight them all the way through.
One case that has remained particularly memorable involved an older woman who suffered severe injuries after tripping over a wheel stop in a parking lot. At first glance, it did not appear to be a strong case. Before representing injured individuals, I spent years defending insurance companies, and during that time I successfully defended many premises liability and trip-and-fall claims. Because of that background, I understood exactly how difficult these cases could be.
However, once I transitioned into plaintiff representation, my perspective changed. The focus was no longer centered on limiting liability exposure for a corporation or insurer. The focus became the individual person who had been harmed and whether what happened to them was preventable.
My mentors encouraged me to continue pursuing the case because what had happened to this woman simply was not right.
The case itself was difficult from the beginning. Establishing liability against the property owner was not straightforward, and the defense initially offered nothing to resolve the matter. But as I spent more time understanding who my client was, the impact the injuries had on her life, and the circumstances surrounding the incident, the approach to the case evolved.
It became much easier to fight for her because I genuinely cared about who she was as a person.
That shift mattered. Instead of viewing the case as simply another premises liability dispute, I began focusing more aggressively on uncovering every fact, every inconsistency, and every piece of evidence connected to what had happened. We developed legal theories supported by the evidence and pursued discovery aggressively, including repeated court intervention when critical information was withheld.
Ultimately, what initially appeared to be a weak case became far more significant once the full picture emerged.
The case was not simply about a wheel stop. It became about what the company had done to my client by placing the wheel stop against the curb, obscuring it with poor lighting, and then withholding evidence from us for an extended period of time.
One of the most important pieces of evidence was not disclosed until approximately a year and a half into litigation. Obtaining that evidence required continuous motions, court appearances, subpoenas, and substantial financial investment by our firm. There was no guarantee of success, but we continued because we believed the evidence mattered and because the client deserved to have the truth uncovered.
That is the part people do not always see—how long it can take to uncover the full picture.
After more than two years of litigation, the case ultimately resolved for nearly $500,000 despite the defense initially refusing to offer any compensation.
What makes the case memorable is not simply the outcome itself. It is the reminder that meaningful advocacy often requires persistence long before results are visible. It requires being willing to invest time, resources, and effort into cases where the path forward is uncertain.
As a Jerez Law personal injury attorney, I believe that is part of the responsibility clients place in us. Not every case begins with obvious answers. Some require patience, investigation, litigation, and the willingness to continue pushing when the easier option would be to walk away.
When a client and our team decide to fight a case to the end, it means stepping into uncertainty, dedicating our time and resources to uncovering the truth, and doing everything we can to advocate for that client at every stage of the process.
That commitment is central to the work we do at Jerez Law.
